Peter Logan’s kin – Part Two

This week we continue our outline pedigree of the descendants of Peter Logan’s niece Nancy (Hurst) Williams. Below are the third and fourth generation in this family, covering the period from the Civil War Era down to the World War II Era.

Third Generation

Julia A. Williams, dau. of George W. and Nancy (Hurst) Williams, b. c.1847 in Tazewell Co., Ill., d. July 1874 in Ill., perh. in Warren Co., m. 26 Nov. 1864 in Knox Co., Ill., to Pvt. James Broadie (“J. B.”) Smith, b. 1 May 1835 in Amherst Co., Va., d. 26 Aug. 1911 in Speer, Stark Co., Ill., bur. in Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Marshall Co., Ill. On 4 Nov. 1863 in Peoria Co., Ill., James enlisted in the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War. A few weeks after enlisting, he married Julia on Thanksgiving Day, and then immediately reported for duty in the Union Army. James was mustered 25 Jan. 1864 in Providence, Rhode Island, into the 11th Regiment Rhode Island Colored Heavy Artillery, Co. M, and spent most of his active duty in the defense of New Orleans, La., against the Confederacy. James was mustered out 2 Oct. 1865 at New Orleans. Julia and James had issue 3 daus. and 1 son, all of them born after James’ return to Illinois after the war. After Julia’s death, James m. 2ndly 31 Jan. 1878 in Peoria Co., Ill., to Fannie (Dines) Lee, b. 11 Sept. 1854 in Maryland, d. 6 Oct. 1914 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Ill., wid. of (NN) Lee and dau. of Phillip and Nellie (Brown) Dines. James and Fannie had no issue.

  • Ardell (“Della”) Smith, b. 3 Sept. 1868 in Ill., d. 21 Sept. 1905 in New Albany, Floyd Co., Ind., bur. West Haven Cemetery, New Albany, Ind., m. 24 July 1890 in Peoria Co., Ill., to Dr. William Octah Vance, M.D., b. 13 May 1856 in Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa, d. 18 Aug. 1906 in New Albany, Ind., bur. with Della in West Haven Cemetery, New Albany, Ind., son of James and Kate (Johnson) Vance. Della and William were both school teachers and principals in New Albany, and William was also a physician. Della died of a hemorrhage caused by a severe coughing fit. She and William had no issue.
  • George Smith, b. 23 July 1869 prob. in Monmouth, Warren Co., Ill., d. 13 Sept. 1936 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Ill., bur. Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Speer, Stark Co., Ill., m. 16 Dec. 1889 in Sangamon Co., Ill., to Georgia Hudson, b. April 1867 in Ill., d. 16 June 1908 in Springfield, Ill., bur. Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Ill., dau. of Mary Hudson. George, a wallpaper hanger, was Georgia’s 2nd husb., and she had issue a son before her m. to George. He and Georgia had issue one son and one dau.
  • Florence Smith, b. 1872 in Monmouth, Warren Co., Ill., d. 19 May 1892 in Peoria, Peoria Co., Ill., bur. in Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, Ill., m. 20 Nov. 1889 in Peoria, Ill., to Edward H. Hagan, b. 8 Sept. 1865 in Nashville, Tenn., d. 26 Nov. 1941 in Chicago, Cook Co., Ill., bur. Lincoln Cemetery, Blue Island, Cook Co., Ill., son of Wilkin Hagan. Edward was a hotel waiter. Florence and Edward had issue two daus. After her death, Edward remarried in 1894 to Ida E. Barnes, b. April 1863 in Peoria, Ill., d. 10 April 1930 in Chicago, Ill., bur. in Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, Ill. Edward and Ida had issue one dau.
  • Mabel Smith, b. c.1874 in Ill., d. ante 16 June 1880 in Ill. Mabel is not listed with her family in the 16 June 1880 U.S. Census for Peoria, Ill., so must have died in childhood prior to the census.
The Civil War volunteer enlistment papers of Pvt. James B. Smith (1835-1911), a former enslaved person who was brought to Illinois with his parents and siblings and emancipated when he was 15 years old. Smith served in the 11th Rhode Island Colored Heavy Artillery and took part in the defense of New Orleans against the Confederacy.

Georgiana “Georgia” Williams, dau. of George W. and Nancy (Hurst) Williams, b. 12 Jan. 1862 in Knoxville, Knox Co., Ill., d. 18 April 1916 in Peoria, Ill., bur. in Knoxville, Ill., m. 22 Sept. 1880 in Peoria, Ill., to Lindsay R. Hall, b. 12 Feb. 1851 in N. Carolina, d. 8 Jan. 1928 in Limestone Township, Peoria Co., Ill., bur. Springdale Cemetery, Peoria, Ill., son of Alfred and Mary (Howson) Hall. Georgiana and Lindsay had issue 5 children. The 6 June 1900 U.S. Census says 4 of their 5 children were then still living, but the 25 April 1910 U.S. Census says Georgiana no children born or living. Presumably that means that all the children of Georgiana and Lindsay had died before 25 April 1910. Their children have not been identified, so it is unknown if any of them married or had issue.

  • Roy Deverne Smith, b. 28 June 1890 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Ill., d. 31 May 1942 at Fort Snelling, Hennepin Co., Minn., bur. Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn, m1. Gladys (NN), m2. c.1925 Beatrice C. (NN), m3. Edith (NN). Roy was a U.S. Army Supply Sgt. in the 366th Inf., 92nd Div., Co. B, during World War I (1917-1919). He d. of tuberculosis at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital at Fort Snelling. No known issue.
  • Mary Smith, b. 6 June 1894 prob. in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Ill., d. 29 Sept. 1918 of Spanish Influenza in Springfield, Ill., bur. in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Ill., m. c.1913 to Odie Roy Mitchell, v. 4 July 1887 in Carmi, White Co., Ill., d. 21 June 1918 of Spanish Influenza in Springfield, Ill., bur. Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Ill., son of James and Ella (Hughes) Mitchell. Mary and Odie had issue two sons.
The veteran’s headstone of Sgt. Roy D. Smith in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn. Smith was a World War I veteran of the U.S. Army’s 566th Infantry, 92nd Division.

Harold”) White, b. 15 May 1886 in Salem, Marion Co., Ill., d. 17 Jan. 1971 in Cook Co., Ill., bur. in Burr Oak Cemetery, Alsip, Cook Co., Ill., son of Edward L. and Alice Gertrude (Herndon) White. Harold was a warrant clerk in the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. Edna and Harold had issue one son. Edna and Harold divorced in the 1920s, and she remarried to Emil Conrad Coleman, b. 21 March 1903 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Ill., d. 9 June 1967 in Springfield, Ill., bur. Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Ill. Edna and Emil, who was auto mechanic, had no issue.
  • Grace Olivia Hagan, b. 31 Aug. 1891 in Ill., d. 22 Aug. 1954 in Chicago, Cook Co., Ill., bur. in Lincoln Cemetery, Blue Island, Cook Co., Ill., m. 21 Oct. 1914 in Joliet, Will Co., Ill., to Benjamin Alex Walton Jr., b. c.1887 in Mo., d. unknown, son of Benjamin Alex Walton of St. Louis, Mo. Grace and Benjamin, who later divorced, had issue one dau.
